THE NAME
+
The word 'iessi' is borrowed from Friulan, the language spoken in Friuli Venezia Giulia, the northeastern region of Italy that lies between the Julian Alps and the Adriatic — and the place where iessi is made.
It means to be, to exist.
It’s pronounced ee-yess-ee.
THE RECIPE
+
iessi is made from natural infusions and botanical extracts at a family-run distillery in Trieste. Its pleasant bitterness derives from an aromatic blend of cinchona bark, gentian root, bitter orange and rhubarb. Bright notes of citrus, ginger and cherry pair with a peppery heat that builds subtly with each sip.
iessi happens to be alcohol-free in case your night, or your life, happens to be, too.
THE INSPIRATION
+
I decided to create iessi because my relationship to drinking evolved over the past few years — I realized that I was drawn to complex tastes and flavors more than alcohol itself.
Inspired by the non-alcoholic alternatives that are reshaping drinking culture in the U.S. (where I grew up), I revisited a family amaro recipe from my Friulan nonna, which I had been making at home for years.
In collaboration with mixologists, distillers and oenologists in France and Italy, we transformed this simple yet heady liqueur into a distinctive apéritif that is unapologetically alcohol-free.
Santé!
