THE NAME
+
The word 'iessi' is borrowed from Friulan, the language spoken in Friuli Venezia Giulia, the northeastern region of Italy that lies between the Julian Alps and the Adriatic — and the place where iessi is made.
It means to be, to exist.
It’s pronounced ee-yess-ee.
THE RECIPE
+
Inspired by an Italian family recipe, iessi is an alcohol-free aperitif made from natural extracts and infusions. Its pleasant bitterness derives from a blend of gentian root, cinchona bark, bitter orange and rhubarb. Lively notes of citrus, ginger and cherry, accented by a touch of pepper.
THE INSPIRATION
+
I started iessi as my relationship to drinking evolved over the past few years. I found myself missing the pleasure of complex tastes, but not the alcohol itself.
I returned to a family amaro recipe from my Friulan nonna that I had been making at home for years. With the help of mixologists, distillers and oenologists in France and Italy, we transformed this simple yet heady liqueur into a distinctive and unapologetically alcohol-free apéritif.
Santé!
