Brussels City Guide

You might not know it, but we’re big fans of the Belgian capital: with its eclectic neighborhoods, art nouveau architecture, creative energy and, of course, dynamic restaurant scene — is an introduction even necessary? Only an hour and a half by train from IESSI HQ, we’re always happy for the excuse to spend a few days in Brussels. For the next time you find yourself there, here are a few of our favorite spots.

PETIT MERCADO

Petit Mercado is always one of our first destinations after getting off the train. This sunny “cantine-épicerie” is the ultimate neighborhood hangout. Stop by to say hi to Mano and Pia, and stay for an excellent coffee, accompanied by a cookie or cake straight out of the oven. If you’re in the neighborhood around lunchtime, take a seat and order their veggie-forward lunch special. And don’t forget to browse their thoughtfully hand-picked selection of natural wines, local beers, small-batch spirits, and even NON-ALCOHOLIC APERITIFS. You'll find delicious hot sauces, stylish chips, all kinds of honey, tasty granolas … ok, you get the idea.

BADI CIDER BAR

This corner of Saint-Gilles is full of great spots: right across the street you’ll find Badi. Alongside an extensive menu of ciders sourced from all around Europe, Badi also serves up brilliant small plates that showcase the very best of the Brussels food scene!

CHEZ RICHARD

For a more typically Bruxellois experience, don’t miss Chez Richard, around the corner from the Palais Royal. In a decidedly touristic neighborhood (overpriced chocolates, industrial beer), Chez Richard is a welcome refuge. Join the regulars and order yourself a heaping plate of moules-frites, accompanied – of course – by a local trappist beer.

CERTO

If you’re lucky enough to find a seat at the counter, you’ll enjoy your meal in the company of chef Federico – whose Roman-inflected banter is sure to make your time at CERTO even more of a delight. Everything on the menu is excellent, but don’t overthink it: go for the cacio et pepe, adored by all of Brussels, and for good reason!

BOA BOA

End your evening at Boa Boa, Uccle's new listening bar that's quickly become a local favorite. The premise is simple, and perfectly executed: great food, excellent cocktails, and musical deep-cuts. Sip on a FRIZZANTE on ice while the DJ alternates between Max Roach and MF Doom.
